O'Neil auditioned for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. Judges loved her voice and she was able to advance to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was given high praise by judges, but she suffered major losses during the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals as she fell to the bottom 3 and bottom 2 and bottom 2 respectively. Judges were shocked by this and advised the audience to choose contestants similar to Melissa, who had most impressive singing talent. In spite of consistently impressive performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, where O'Neil made it into the final two of the competition's contest, Werner said that in the morning, newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was contacted right away from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
